Kraken Curtain

We almost done with the work on our master bedroom (omg omg omg!) But while we finish up I thought I would share a project's from last year's house updates. We did a cosmetic rehab of our bathroom last year and much of it was designed around this Kraken Shower Curtain that I fell in love with when I saw it.

As you probably noticed if you followed the link to the website where this is sold, it's a $60 shower curtain. Guh, I know. If you're anything like me, you consider $60 an exorbitant amount for a shower curtain but in my love struck haze I coughed up the money and waited expectantly for my beautiful curtain to arrive.

Had I done my homework I would have known not to waste my money. When it came it was piece of garbage! Not only was it on extraordinarily cheap thin material, but the image was completely pixelated. The image quality wasn't even consistent throughout the image.

After some contemplation (and my mourning period) I decided that there was just no way I could reconcile paying $60 for this disaster. I looked for a similar option but there was none to be found. Finally, I decided I would just have to make my own.
I looked for a plain white shower curtain to paint but it was surprisingly difficult to find a non patterned white fabric shower curtain. I bought some white fabric (look for a bolt that's at least 76" wide so you don't have to seam the fabric together) and cut it to 82" x 76" (this will give you a 6" top and bottom hem and 2" side hems).

I lightly sketched out how the image would lay out (I held onto the disaster shower curtain for a few extra days so I could trace when necessary). Once I was generally happy with the layout, I broke out the black acrylic paint.  I am NOT an artist, but I will tell you that quality paint brushes go a long way in helping to clean up any painting. When I started painting the boat, things got pretty iffy for a while but I kept at it and somehow it turned out okay.

Once I finished up the painting (and let it dry of course) I sewed together the shower curtain (Here is a great tutorial for sewing a shower curtain)...and VOILA!
